Sotheby's Unveils Marcel, a Fine Dining Gem Inside Its Iconic Headquarters

Sotheby’s has opened a new restaurant, Marcel, inside its Madison Avenue headquarters. Located in the historic Breuer Building, the venue combines fine dining with art and design. The space reflects a collaboration between the auction house, Paris-born chef Marie-Aude Rose, and design firm Roman and Williams. The Breuer Building, completed in 1966, once housed the Whitney Museum for half a century. Roman and Williams preserved its Brutalist roots while adding a softer, more inviting atmosphere for Marcel. The restaurant’s interiors now feature custom tableware and a mix of global design influences.

Marcel’s menu blends French techniques with New York’s classic dining style. Diners can personalise their meals by selecting a protein, sauce, and side. The drinks list, developed with Sotheby’s expertise, offers an extensive wine selection. The restaurant’s layout includes a main dining area around an open kitchen, a private room for 25 guests, and an outdoor terrace seating 70. Concrete walls display rotating artworks, including pieces by Roy Lichtenstein, Louise Bourgeois, and Gustav Klimt.

Marcel brings together food, art, and architecture under one roof. The restaurant’s flexible menu and curated wine list aim to attract both collectors and casual diners. Its design and location within Sotheby’s headquarters further tie it to the world of fine art and luxury.
