Düsseldorf tightens security for Japan Day fireworks and crowds

Düsseldorf authorities have announced strict security measures for this weekend’s Japan Day celebrations. The event, featuring a major fireworks display, will see road closures, surveillance, and restrictions on weapons and knives in the city centre. Police are urging residents and visitors to plan ahead for potential disruptions. Starting around 8:00 PM on the day of the fireworks, two key bridges will close to traffic. The Oberkassel Bridge will shut in both directions, while the Rheinknie Bridge will block outbound vehicles. These closures aim to manage crowds and ensure safety during the event.

A long-standing weapons and knife restriction will remain in force across Düsseldorf’s Old Town. This ban, active on weekends and before public holidays, runs from 6:00 PM to 8:00 AM. Police have also warned of multiple gatherings in the city centre, unrelated to Japan Day, which could worsen traffic delays.

To monitor the situation, officers will use mobile video surveillance near Flinger Straße on Saturday. A police drone will additionally provide aerial footage at various times. With heavy congestion expected, authorities are advising the public to rely on public transport instead of private vehicles. The combined measures—bridge closures, surveillance, and weapon restrictions—are designed to maintain order during a busy weekend. Traffic delays are likely, and police have stressed the importance of using alternative travel options. The restrictions will remain in place until early Sunday morning.
