France races to host Europe's first AI Gigafactory with EDF's backing

France is pushing to become the home of a major European AI Gigafactory. The country’s strong digital infrastructure and low-carbon electricity supply make it a leading candidate. EDF has now joined the AION consortium to back the bid, highlighting France’s strategic advantages in AI development. The AION consortium brings together key players from tech, telecommunications, and investment sectors. Members include Artefact, Bull, Capgemini, iliad Group, Scaleway, Orange, and private equity firm Ardian. Their goal is to support France’s application for the European AI Gigafactories programme.

The consortium operates on four core principles: performance, trust, openness, and responsibility. These values align with the broader aim of creating high-capacity AI infrastructure hubs. Such facilities will offer vastly increased computing power, integrated data resources, and advanced automation.

EDF’s involvement strengthens the bid, as the company emphasises France’s competitive and sovereign energy supply. Béatrice Bigois, EDF’s Group Executive Director, noted that the nation’s low-carbon electricity is a major asset for AI growth. EDF has pledged full support to help establish a world-class European AI Gigafactory in France.

The project’s success is seen as vital for Europe’s economic future. Access to large-scale, affordable, and sovereign computing power will shape the continent’s competitiveness in AI-driven industries. France’s bid for the AI Gigafactory now has backing from both private and public sectors. The AION consortium’s combined expertise and EDF’s energy resources position the country strongly. If successful, the project will boost Europe’s ability to develop advanced AI infrastructure at scale.
