Shanghai Film Festival 2025 Unveils Global Premieres and Rising Asian Talent

The 28th Shanghai International Film Festival will take place from June 12 to 21. Organised under the guidance of the China Film Administration, the event is a collaboration between China Media Group and the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government. This year’s programme includes premieres, competitions, and a strong focus on emerging Asian filmmakers. The festival’s main competition, the Golden Goblet Awards, will showcase 12 films from 15 countries. These include world premieres from Indonesia, Turkey-Germany, Morocco, China, Chinese Mainland-Hong Kong, Belgium, Brazil-U.K., Russia, Germany, and Canada. Leading the main jury is Hong Kong actor Tony Leung Chiu-wai.

The documentary section features five world premieres, with films originating from China, Chile, Spain, North Macedonia-Croatia-Slovenia, and Serbia-Bulgaria-Croatia. Meanwhile, the animation category presents five feature-length titles. The Asian New Talent section highlights 12 films, all debut or second features by Asian directors. This year’s entries include world premieres from India-Germany, Bangladesh-Germany, Turkey, Jordan-KSA, Kyrgyzstan, and multiple titles from China. Singaporean filmmaker Anthony Chen heads the jury for this category.

The festival will run for ten days, offering a platform for both established and rising filmmakers. With a mix of international and regional premieres, it continues to promote global and Asian cinema. The event remains a key date in the film industry calendar.
