USMNT's World Cup defence in doubt as Chris Richards battles injury

The US men’s national team faces uncertainty over Chris Richards’ fitness ahead of the World Cup. The centre back, seen as a key player in defence, has yet to train with the squad due to an ankle injury. With the final 26-man roster not due until Monday, coaches still have time to assess his condition. Richards was present at the team’s camp in Fayetteville, Georgia, but will miss the upcoming friendly against Senegal in Charlotte. His next chance to prove his fitness comes in the match against Germany, a crucial test before the tournament.

Head coach Mauricio Pochettino has expressed doubts about whether Richards will recover in time. The defender’s absence would leave a gap in the back line, as he is considered the team’s most important centre back. FIFA rules allow injury replacements up to 24 hours before the first game, which kicks off against Paraguay on June 12.

If Richards cannot play, potential stand-ins include Tristan Blackmon, Walker Zimmerman, and Alex Freeman. The coaching staff will monitor his progress closely before finalising the squad. The USMNT must submit their official World Cup roster by Monday. Richards’ participation remains in question, and his performance in the Germany friendly could decide his fate. A final decision will depend on his recovery in the coming days.
