Jerod Mayo trades NFL sideline for Wall Street after Patriots exit
Jerod Mayo has moved from the NFL to private equity after a short stint as head coach of the New England Patriots. The former linebacker, known for his disciplined approach, now works as a managing director at Fifth Down Capital. His shift follows a single season in charge of the Patriots, which ended with a 4-13 record.
Mayo’s football career began as a player before he transitioned into coaching. After retiring, he joined the Patriots’ staff in 2019 as linebackers coach, a role he held until 2023. His leadership style—rooted in preparation, accountability, and trust—earned him respect within the organisation.
In 2024, the Patriots promoted him to head coach, but his tenure lasted just one season. The team struggled, finishing with only four wins, and Mayo was dismissed at the end of the year. Before his coaching career, he had also worked outside football as vice president of business development at Optum. By February 2025, Mayo had joined Fifth Down Capital, an investment firm that collaborates with leading companies and fund managers. His background in political science from the University of Tennessee, combined with his experience in high-pressure environments, positioned him well for the role.
Mayo’s transition from football to finance marks a new chapter after his brief but challenging time as an NFL head coach. At Fifth Down Capital, he now applies his strategic mindset to private equity. The firm specialises in backing ambitious companies and investment managers.
