Terry "Superlungs" Reid: The Man Who Turned Down Led Zeppelin

Terry Reid, often referred to as "Superlungs" for his powerful voice, had a remarkable career in the music industry, but he is perhaps best known for turning down the lead vocalist position for a band that would become one of the greatest in rock history – Led Zeppelin.

In 1968, Jimmy Page approached Reid to front the New Yardbirds, a band that was on the brink of greatness. However, Reid was already committed to two tours with the Rolling Stones and another with Cream, making it impossible for him to join Page's new project without significant complications.

Despite Reid's request for compensation for the tour fees he would lose and an explanation to Keith Richards about his departure from the Stones' tours, his conditions were not met. Consequently, Reid suggested Page audition a young singer, Robert Plant, and drummer John Bonham, both of whom ultimately formed Led Zeppelin with Page.

Robert Plant, in a show of respect for Reid, told the audience during a performance in 2004 at The Joint in Los Angeles that Terry Reid should have had his life. Reid himself responded by saying he wouldn't mind some of the money.

Reid's career decisions were not just influenced by scheduling conflicts. He had a strong desire to forge his own path rather than join established or rising bands. This was evident in his rejection of offers not only from Led Zeppelin but also from Deep Purple, whom he felt were "too metal" for his style.

Reid's solo career was also hampered by a contractual dispute with producer Mickie Most, which led to years of litigation and prevented him from recording for a significant period. This dispute partly explains why he was unavailable or unwilling to take on such major opportunities despite their potential.

Despite missing out on the opportunity to front Led Zeppelin, Reid's music continues to resonate with fans. His album "The River" is currently being listened to, and tears are being shed for him. Reid and Plant shared stages with The Band Of Joy on several occasions, and they frequently practiced the song "Season Of The Witch" together.

Terry Reid, who was affectionately known as "Superlungs," passed away recently. His voice, range, and charisma captured a carefree era, and his influence can still be felt in the music industry today. Despite turning down one of the most iconic bands in rock history, Reid's story is a testament to the power of following one's own path.
