BTS sparks frenzy in Mexico City with historic first concert in years
Tens of thousands of BTS fans flooded Mexico City over the weekend as the K-pop supergroup performed in the country for the first time in four years. The excitement drew crowds not only inside the stadium but also across the capital, with many gathering just to catch a glimpse of the band. An estimated 50,000 fans packed into Mexico City’s central square, hoping to see BTS and even the country’s president. Claudia Sheinbaum made a rare appearance, inviting the group to the National Palace—a gesture usually reserved for foreign leaders. During the event, she also extended an invitation for the band to return in 2027.
Outside the stadium, thousands more fans, known as the ARMY, gathered without tickets. Some, like Rosa Gabriela Hernández Flores from Sinaloa, listened to the music and watched screens from afar. Hernández later called the experience 'magical,' despite not being inside the venue. Meanwhile, scalpers took advantage of the high demand, selling tickets for as much as $3,500 each. On stage, BTS singer Kim Nam-joon addressed the crowd in Spanish, telling them, *'I love you, I adore you.'* The emotional moment sparked even louder cheers from fans. After the concert, President Sheinbaum went further, sending a formal letter to South Korea’s president. She requested additional BTS concert dates in Mexico. However, the response confirmed that the group’s packed world tour schedule would not allow for extra shows.
The visit left a lasting impression, with fans celebrating the rare opportunity to see BTS live. While no further concerts were confirmed, the president’s invitation for 2027 keeps hope alive for another performance. The event also highlighted the band’s massive global influence, drawing crowds and political attention alike.
