In the Valais (Wallis) region of southern Switzerland, the Birch glacier suffered a catastrophic collapse on Wednesday. In August 2017, a similar event occurred at Pizzo Cengalo in the Alps, killing eight hikers and causing significant damage. This recent incident provides a grim reminder of the potential risks and devastation that such events can cause.

Authorities are currently assessing evacuation plans and warning residents in potentially affected areas. They remain vigilant, cognizant of the ongoing threats of further rockfalls and debris flows that might result from the unstable rock at Kleines Nesthorn.

Cleanup operations are currently infeasible due to the hazardous debris cone, posing significant risks to rescue workers and machinery. The situation remains volatile, with no clear timeline for the safe return of residents to Blatten. Continuous monitoring and protective measures are being implemented to safeguard the affected areas.
