It Follows director David Robert Mitchell does dinosaurs in suburbia? With Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor? Here's the first trailer for The End Of Oak Street:
Dinosaurs invade suburbia in The End Of Oak Street's chilling new thriller
The world started going seriously wrong when Hollywood filmmakers stopped making (nominally) family-friendly adventure movies with horror overtones - films like Poltergeist and Gremlins, that drove ratings boards to their wits' end.
Well, here comes It Follows director David Robert Mitchell with The End Of Oak Street - his "IMAX thrill-ride" where dinosaurs come to suburbia.
There's a definite Spielbergian streak to the film formerly known as Flowervale Street, from its neat, all-American neighbourhood to the distinct air of menace hanging over its wholesome family.
The plot is straight out of The Twilight Zone: the Platt family - played by Anne Hathaway, Ewan McGregor, Maisy Stella and Christian Convery - find their neighbourhood sent back to the age of the dinosaurs following some inexplicable event. How did it happen? How on earth do they get back?
Like any decent teaser trailer, this one is coy about the details, instead efficiently sets up that fantastical premise. It's all wonderfully moody - we like that prowling opening shot down the hallway, and the split-diopter shot of Hathaway laying out their predicament in hushed tones. We do love a good split-diopter shot.
There's the briefest glimpse of a menacing thunder lizard, seen through a window, and a fun wide digital matte shot of the edge of the neighbourhood, houses and even a school bus sliced clean in two. Our money's one a science project gone awry, like The Philadelphia Experiment with scales. Anyone remember The Philadelphia Experiment? No, not the film with Tom Hanks.
The End Of Oak Street is in UK cinemas from the 14th August. Count us in.
