Payton Tolle pitches through grief on Mother's Day weekend
Boston Red Sox pitcher Payton Tolle took the mound on Sunday with a heavy heart. The left-hander was playing just two years after his mother, Jina Tolle, passed away from colon cancer at the age of 48. The emotional weight of Mother’s Day made the game even harder for him. Tolle’s start was originally scheduled for Saturday but was postponed due to rain. The delay gave him more time to reflect on his mother’s death on May 9, 2024. Before the game, he honoured her memory by wearing pink socks and choosing Mother by Danzig as his walk-out song.
His father tried to lighten the mood with a joke about the song choice. But Tolle admitted he struggled to focus, knowing his mother would have told him to 'suck it up and do better.' Despite the emotional toll, he pitched five innings against the Tampa Bay Rays, allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out four. This outing followed his first major league win in his previous start against the Detroit Tigers. Though the results weren’t as strong this time, the day was about more than baseball for Tolle.
Tolle’s performance came during a difficult weekend, marked by grief and remembrance. The pink socks and walk-out song served as tributes to his mother’s memory. For now, he continues to pitch, carrying her legacy with him on the field.
