Karate One Youth League kicks off with 1,000 young fighters in Manila

The Karate One Youth League is set to begin on May 14 at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City. Nearly 1,000 young karatekas from 59 countries will compete in the event, which has drawn strong international interest. Organisers have prepared a vibrant opening ceremony, cultural performances, and a welcome dinner for participants. A seven-member Malaysian junior squad arrived ahead of the competition to train at the Association for the Advancement of Karatedo (AAK) gym in Mandaluyong. The team includes some of Malaysia’s top young karatekas, eager to test their skills in the tournament.

The event will feature 34 categories across kumite (sparring) and kata (forms). Divisions include Under-14, 12 to 13 years old, Cadets 14 to 15 years old, and Junior 16 to 17 years old, with both boys and girls competing. On the second day, an opening ceremony will showcase drum beaters, cultural dancers, a laser show, and a parade of flags. Before that, the Department of Tourism will host a welcome dinner for all participants on Wednesday. The tournament is presented by the Philippine Sports Commission, with support from the SM Group of Companies and the Philippine Olympic Committee. Richard Lim, president of Karate Pilipinas Sports Federation, Inc., noted that karate’s global reach has expanded, with 200 member countries now part of the World Karate Federation. The federation’s motto, *The World is Our Dojo*, reflects its inclusive mission.

The Karate One Youth League will run from May 14 at the Mall of Asia Arena. With nearly 1,000 competitors and a packed schedule of events, it promises to be a major showcase for young talent. The tournament also highlights the Philippines’ role in promoting karate on the world stage.
