UAAP debuts golf as a demonstration sport with fierce competition ahead
Golf will make its first appearance in the UAAP as a demonstration sport this season. The tournament kicks off on 11 May 2023 at Tagaytay Midlands, featuring a mix of established talent and rising challengers. With no clear frontrunner guaranteed success, the event promises tight competition across all four rounds. The UAAP golf tournament will follow a 72-hole aggregate gross stroke play format. Players will compete over four rounds, with only those completing all rounds eligible for individual honours. Each team will send three to four players per round, with the top three scores contributing to the team total.
De La Salle enters as the favourite, fresh from dominating last year’s ICTSI Intercollegiate Tournament. Their men’s team includes Zachary Castro, Jacob Cajita, Miguel Fusilero, Ferdinand Lagman, and Martin Lu. Julia Lua will lead the Lady Archers, aiming to extend their recent success. Rival schools have not taken the challenge lightly. Ateneo and UP bring experience from last year’s ICTSI campaign, while UST and Adamson have strengthened their programmes. All four teams have trained intensively to test De La Salle’s dominance. Organisers stress that no lead will be safe until the final hole. The format and depth of competition ensure that both pedigree and consistency will decide the outcome.
The tournament begins on 11 May with all teams vying for early momentum. Only those finishing all four rounds will contend for individual awards. With De La Salle facing determined opposition, the event’s debut could set a high standard for future UAAP golf competitions.
