The Shawangunk Mountains Scenic Byway is an 88-mile route set just 90 miles north of New York City. Known locally as the 'Gunks', this stretch of road winds through protected forests, historic villages, and some of the state’s most dramatic landscapes.
The byway was officially named a New York State Scenic Byway in 2006. It also holds recognition as a Path Through History route, drawing visitors to its mix of natural beauty and heritage. At the heart of the byway lies a 16-mile core stretch, where steep elevation changes lead to sweeping overlooks. This section provides direct access to hiking trails, nature preserves, and some of the region’s most striking views.
The route passes through over 30,000 acres of protected land, including lush farmland, sheer climbing cliffs, and quaint Hudson Valley towns. Among its highlights is Minnewaska State Park Preserve, where visitors find dramatic waterfalls, cliffside lakes, and miles of trails for hiking and climbing. Nearby, Mohonk Preserve offers a vast network of cliffside paths and historic carriage roads, with panoramic views of the Hudson Valley and Catskill Mountains.
A standout feature along the byway is the Rosendale Trestle, a 45-meter-high bridge spanning nearly 300 meters over the Wallkill Valley. This former railway structure now serves as part of the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail, attracting walkers and cyclists.
The byway also leads to the village of New Paltz, a historic town with small-town charm. From here, travellers can easily explore the scenic route’s most celebrated spots, from rushing waterfalls to expansive valley vistas. The area’s dazzling white quartzite cliffs and rolling green farmland add to its distinctive character.
