Burnaby Hospital expansion scaled back as BC cancels key health-care projects

The BC government has cancelled several health-care projects, including the Burnaby Hospital expansion. However, Phase 2 of the redevelopment—covering 160 new beds and a cancer centre—will still move forward. The decision follows concerns over rising costs and a lack of public input in the original plans. Burnaby Hospital currently serves over 500,000 residents but has one of the lowest bed counts in the province. The expansion was part of a $1.7 billion project listed on Infrastructure B.C.’s website. Yet, delays and budget overruns led the government to cancel the existing contract, calling it a chance to 'reset' the billion-dollar scheme.

The community had already raised over $55 million to support the redevelopment. Burnaby Hospital and Community Foundation CEO expressed 'deep disappointment' at the cancellation. Despite this, the government has pledged to complete the hospital’s construction. Phase 2, which includes critical upgrades like additional beds and a cancer treatment facility, remains on track. Officials have not yet confirmed a revised timeline or cost for the remaining work.

The cancellation allows the government to reassess the project’s scope and budget. Phase 2 will still deliver essential upgrades, though details on funding and scheduling remain unclear. Burnaby residents will continue relying on an overstretched hospital until the new facilities open.
