Leiria's storm-hit businesses fight back after months of devastation

Businesses in Leiria are slowly rebuilding after a powerful storm caused widespread damage earlier this year. Among those affected, Muralhas restaurant has finally reopened, while a local construction company faces a long recovery after suffering millions in losses. The storm left Muralhas restaurant with a shattered roof and broken windows, forcing it to close for nearly three months. Owner João Pereira took on €300,000 in debt to speed up repairs and avoid further delays. Despite the financial strain, the restaurant fully reopened at the end of April. Pereira is still waiting for insurers to respond to his claim for storm damage.

A nearby civil construction and public works company also suffered severe damage to its facilities and machinery. The destruction led to a sharp drop in revenue, pushing the firm to hire outside contractors to meet client deadlines. This move further increased costs, adding to the financial burden. Reconstruction at the company is now set to begin in May.

Many other families and business owners in Leiria are still dealing with the storm’s aftermath, working to restore their properties and livelihoods. Muralhas restaurant has resumed operations, but the road to full recovery remains uncertain for others. The construction company’s rebuilding efforts will start next month, though the financial impact of the storm continues to weigh heavily. Across Leiria, the process of repair and renewal is ongoing.
