Leninsky District tears down Sports Market after court ruling on illegal use
Demolition work has begun at the Sports Market in the Leninsky District. Heavy machinery, including an excavator-loader, entered the site from Fadeyev Street to clear metal-framed stalls. The operation follows a court order banning commercial activity on the land due to legal violations. The Leninsky District Prosecutor’s Office obtained the court ruling after uncovering serious breaches of land and urban planning laws. Officials argued that the site had been used improperly, leading to the ban on commercial operations. The prosecutor’s office also challenged a development decree, forcing authorities to reconsider plans while gathering input from local residents.
Employees from Urban Territory Maintenance (UTM) and law enforcement are overseeing the demolition. Alongside the market clearance, cleanup efforts are underway along the Obyasneniya River, where illegal garages are being removed. The area is slated for a comprehensive development project, which includes 20 residential buildings and new public facilities. The demolition marks the first step in enforcing the court’s decision and addressing long-standing legal issues. With the land now cleared of unauthorised structures, authorities will move forward with revised development plans. Residents’ feedback will play a key role in shaping the project’s next phases.
