Portuguese Coach André Sá Stuns Brazil with Historic Volleyball Championship Win

André Sá, a 40-year-old Portuguese coach, has secured his first national championship abroad by leading Dentil Praia Clube to victory in Brazil. The win marks a major achievement in a country known as a volleyball powerhouse. Just days earlier, he also guided Mulhouse to the French women’s league title. Sá arrived in Brazil facing scepticism, with critics questioning his ability simply because he was Portuguese. Despite this, he proved his skill by delivering a title that qualifies Dentil Praia Clube for the South American Championship, Brazil’s Super Cup, and the 2027 FIVB Club World Championship.

Before this success, Sá had already built an impressive career in Portugal. He won three league titles—two with Academia José Moreira/FC Porto and one with Benfica. His trophy collection also includes four Super Cups and two Portuguese Cups. Brazil’s dominance in volleyball is well-known, with the national team earning bronze at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Sá’s achievement in such a competitive environment further highlights his coaching ability.

The championship solidifies Dentil Praia Clube’s place in top-tier competitions over the next three years. Sá’s back-to-back titles in France and Brazil also reinforce his reputation as a coach capable of winning in different leagues. His success may now encourage other European coaches to pursue opportunities abroad.
