'Wolves' Exposes the Dark Allure of Black Metal and Extremism

The new film Wolves dives into the dark links between black metal and far-right extremism. Directed with a sharp eye, it follows Luana, a young woman pulled into the scene by her fascination with its intensity and mystery. The story unfolds as she becomes entangled with Wiktor, the enigmatic frontman of the band WLVS. Black metal first took shape in Scandinavia during the 1980s. Known for its raw aggression, occult imagery, and rejection of mainstream society, the genre has long been tied to controversy. Films like Lords of Chaos (2018) documented its violent past, including church burnings and criminal acts.

*Wolves* centres on Luana, who joins WLVS’s tour to manage merchandise and social media. Her real motivation, though, is Wiktor, the band’s new singer. As she spends more time with him, her emotional dependence grows, leading her to justify his troubling behaviour. Wiktor, played by Bartosz Bielenia, remains a puzzle throughout the film. His Black Sun tattoo—a symbol linked to far-right ideology—hints at deeper allegiances. Bielenia’s performance keeps viewers guessing, never fully revealing his character’s true intentions. The film avoids painting the entire black metal scene with the same brush. Instead, it focuses on how individuals like Luana can be drawn in, seduced by the allure of rebellion and belonging. Her personal struggles make her vulnerable to the ideology lurking beneath the music’s surface.

By the end of Wolves, the connections between extremism and the subculture become undeniable. Luana’s journey shows how easily fascination can turn into complicity. The film leaves audiences questioning the fine line between artistic provocation and dangerous ideology.
