Konchalovsky's Uncle Vanya arrives in Vladivostok for two exclusive shows
The Moscow Sovremennik Theater will bring Andrei Konchalovsky’s Uncle Vanya to Vladivostok for two performances on May 24 and 25. The play, part of the director’s celebrated Chekhov cycle, arrives as a highlight of the touring season. Organisers expect a strong emotional response from local audiences. The production forms one-third of Konchalovsky’s acclaimed adaptations of Chekhov’s major works, alongside Three Sisters and The Cherry Orchard. Alexei Cherepnev, the tour’s coordinator, has expressed hopes of eventually staging the remaining plays in Vladivostok as well.
The Primorsky Philharmonic Hall underwent adjustments to replicate the original Moscow staging. Natalya Vdovina, one of the cast members, stressed the role of authentic props in creating a vivid, immersive experience. The set design and technical elements were carefully adapted to match the production’s established aesthetic. Yulia Vysotskaya, a lead actor in the play, believes theatre should resonate most with those who engage deeply with life’s complexities. The cast—including Pavel Derevyanko, Vitaly Kishchenko, Vladimir Maizinger, Olga Anokhina, Alexander Bobrovsky, Larisa Kuznetsova, and Liliya Bolgashvili—has noted how the performance evolves with each show. Actors continually reinterpret the text, uncovering new layers of meaning in Chekhov’s work. The tour became possible due to a rare alignment of the actors’ schedules and the availability of technical crews. The company chose Vladivostok in anticipation of a powerful connection with its audience, expecting the play’s themes to strike a particular chord.
The performances will take place at the Primorsky Philharmonic, offering local theatregoers a chance to see a production shaped by years of refinement. If successful, the visit could pave the way for more of Konchalovsky’s Chekhov works to reach the region. Tickets for both dates are now available to the public.
