Washington Huskies fall to South Florida in NCAA tournament thriller

Washington’s run in the NCAA tournament came to an end on Sunday after a 6-4 loss to South Florida. The defeat eliminated the Huskies from the Fayetteville Regional. Earlier in the day, they had beaten Fordham 5-2 to stay alive in the competition. Washington started strong, with Giselle Alvarez hitting a two-run double in the top of the sixth inning. Her hit put the Huskies ahead 4-3, building on their earlier 5-2 victory over Fordham.

Kaycie Burdick contributed three hits during the game, while Alexis DeBoer went 2 for 4 and drove in two runs. But South Florida responded quickly in the bottom of the sixth. Olivia Elliott homered to tie the game, setting up a dramatic finish.

Karhys Pierce then delivered a go-ahead two-run double, pushing South Florida to a 6-4 lead. The Bulls held on to secure the win and end Washington’s tournament run. The loss marks the end of Washington’s season in the NCAA tournament. Their next appearance will be in the Big Ten tournament, which begins on Tuesday in Omaha, Nebraska. The Huskies finish the Fayetteville Regional with one win and two losses.
