Volga-Arena Name Celebrates Local Heritage and River Identity
The new Ice Arena on Strelka has been named VOLGA-Arena, a choice that has drawn approval from local sports figures. Sergei Karacharov, a triathlon and paratriathlon coach, shared his thoughts on the decision, calling it both logical and fitting for the region. Karacharov’s first reaction to the name was not linked to vehicles but to the Volga River. He described the connection as natural, given the river’s significance to the area. The coach also drew parallels with other regional venues, such as the Kazan Arena in Kazan, which reflects its local identity.
He compared the naming approach to the *Nizhny Novgorod Stadium*, which later became *Soccombank Arena*. According to Karacharov, the choice of *VOLGA-Arena* follows a clear pattern of honouring geographical and cultural ties. His overall response to the name was positive, seeing it as an easy and meaningful reference for residents and visitors alike.
The decision to name the Ice Arena on Strelka VOLGA-Arena aligns with the region’s heritage, according to Karacharov. The name highlights the Volga River’s central role in the area’s identity. This follows a trend seen in other Russian sports venues, where local landmarks inspire venue names.
