Mexico City's elite police unit welcomes 74 new officers ahead of FIFA World Cup

Mexico City’s police force has welcomed 74 new officers to its elite Metropolitan Special Operations Unit (UMOE). The graduates, including eight women and 66 men, completed a gruelling training programme designed to bolster security ahead of the FIFA World Cup. The latest UMOE recruits underwent months of intense preparation. Their training covered specialised physical conditioning, tactical firearms defence, and air-mobile operations. They also learned combat trauma care and other high-risk skills essential for urban policing.

One of the graduates, Yogenis, pushed through the course’s extreme demands to fulfil her ambition of joining the unit. Her success reflects the determination required to complete the programme.

Since its creation, the UMOE has played a key role in reducing violence across Mexico City. The unit has also been instrumental in capturing high-priority criminal targets. These new officers will now reinforce those efforts as the capital prepares for a major international event. The addition of 74 trained specialists strengthens the UMOE’s ability to respond to complex security challenges. Their deployment comes at a critical time, with Mexico City hosting the FIFA World Cup in the near future. The unit’s expanded ranks aim to maintain public safety during the tournament and beyond.
