Vladivostok cracks down on reckless motorbike and scooter riders after deadly crashes

Vladivostok’s traffic police have launched a fresh crackdown on motorbike and scooter riders breaking road rules. The move follows a series of accidents, including two fatalities in early May, and a viral video showing minors flouting traffic laws.

On May 4, a 55-year-old motorcyclist died on the Mikhailovka–Dalneye highway after losing control on a bend. He was not wearing protective gear. Three days later, a 22-year-old moped rider was killed in Leninsky District when he collided with a car while driving the wrong way.

Since the start of the riding season, officers have penalised 38 riders for violations. Common offences include unregistered vehicles, missing licence plates, riding without proper documents, and failing to wear helmets. Two accidents involving underage moped riders have also been recorded this year, leaving two children injured. The recent enforcement push was triggered by a widely shared video on social media. It showed three minors making a dangerous U-turn across a double solid line on a pedestrian crossing in the Snegovaya Pad area. Police have stressed that even minor collisions can throw riders to the ground, often causing severe injuries due to their lack of protection. Authorities are reminding all motorbike and scooter users that operating any two-wheeler—even a moped—requires a valid licence, a helmet, and full compliance with traffic regulations.

The crackdown continues as police urge riders and their parents to take responsibility for road safety. Fines and penalties will remain in place for those caught breaking the rules, with enforcement expected to stay strict throughout the season.
