Uli Borowka opens up about alcohol addiction in raw school talks
Former Bundesliga footballer Uli Borowka recently shared his battle with alcohol addiction during a talk with students. Known as ‘The Axe’ during his playing days, he spoke openly about the damage addiction caused to his life and family. The event was organised by several local groups, including schools and addiction support services.
Borowka visited Gottfried-Linke-Realschule and Kranich-Gymnasium to discuss his struggles. Students questioned him about his drinking habits, the effects of addiction, and how he balanced fatherhood with his problems. He stressed the need to reflect on personal consumption and build healthier ways to cope.
The talk was part of a wider effort to raise awareness about addiction. Organisers included AWO Braunschweig, Salzgitter’s Migration Citizen Services, and the Salzgitter Prevention Council. Funding came from BKK Salzgitter and BKK Public, ensuring the event could reach more young people. AWO-Salto Addiction Support, which provides counselling, also played a key role. Borowka’s book, *‘Full Throttle: My Double Life as a Football Pro’*, details his experiences on and off the pitch. Teachers and pupils responded positively, with many calling for similar events in the future.
The session left a strong impression on attendees, who praised Borowka’s honesty. His story highlighted the real consequences of addiction while offering practical advice. Organisers now plan to expand the programme for other schools in the region.
