Severe thunderstorm warning issued for Mainz on Sunday evening

A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Mainz and nearby regions. The alert, released by the Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD), covers Sunday evening and warns of intense weather conditions ahead. The storms are set to hit on the evening of May 10. Forecasters predict gale-force winds with gusts reaching 70 kilometres per hour—strong enough to match Beaufort scale 8. Alongside the wind, heavy downpours are expected, with rainfall rates of around 15 litres per square metre each hour.

Small hail is also likely during the storms. The warning remains active until 11:30 p.m., urging residents to stay cautious throughout the evening.

The DWD’s alert highlights the risk of damaging winds, torrential rain, and hail. Local authorities may advise people to secure outdoor items and avoid unnecessary travel during the storm. The warning covers Mainz and all surrounding districts.
