Two dramatic rescues unfold on Oahu's treacherous hiking trails
Two separate hiking incidents on Oahu’s trails required emergency rescues on Thursday afternoon. A man in his 20s fell roughly 100 feet off the Pali Notches Trail, while another in his 70s became too exhausted to descend from the Aiea Loop Trail. Both were safely recovered by rescue teams.
The first incident involved a hiker in his 20s who lost his footing on the Pali Notches Trail. The steep, unsanctioned path features sheer vertical drops, making it particularly hazardous. After the fall, the man was stranded and unable to move.
Honolulu Fire Department’s Air 1 helicopter spotted the injured hiker at 1:43 p.m. Rescue personnel were lowered to his location, secured him, and airlifted him to a nearby landing zone. Care was then transferred to Honolulu Emergency Medical Services at 1:18 p.m., with a second handover confirmed at 2:28 p.m. In a separate incident, a man in his 70s became exhausted near the summit of the Aiea Loop Trail. Unable to descend safely on his own, he required assistance from rescue crews. No injuries were reported among the personnel involved in either operation.
Both hikers were successfully retrieved and handed over to medical teams. The Pali Notches Trail remains an unofficial route with significant risks, while the Aiea Loop Trail, though popular, can still pose challenges for those unprepared. Authorities have reminded the public to hike within their limits and stick to maintained paths.
