Tragic Death of Chilean Climber After 500-Meter Fall on Llaima Volcano

A 42-year-old woman has died after falling from Llaima volcano in southern Chile. The accident happened on 17 May 2023, during a climb that ended in tragedy when strong winds caused her to lose her footing. Ingarid Daniella Vera Figueroa had shared a video on social media before starting her ascent. In it, she spoke about her excitement for the climb and hoped for a safe journey to the summit.

Conditions on the volcano were harsh that day. While attempting to take a photograph, Figueroa was blown off balance by powerful gusts. She fell roughly 500 metres down the steep slope. Search teams faced delays due to heavy rain and high winds. Several days later, rescuers located her body and transported it back to her hometown.

The incident serves as a reminder of the risks posed by extreme weather in mountainous terrain. Figueroa’s death follows a climb that began with optimism but ended in a fatal accident on one of Chile’s most active volcanoes.
