Sverdlovsk Oblast blends sports and history to honor Victory Day legacy

Sverdlovsk Oblast blends sports and history to honor Victory Day legacy

Sverdlovsk Oblast is marking the 81st anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War with a series of sporting events and patriotic initiatives. From martial arts tournaments to military-themed games, the region has organised activities to honour the memory of those who fought in the war.

One of the most symbolic events will take place on May 8, when students and coaches from the *Spartakovets* Hockey Academy participate in a patriotic procession. Skaters will carry portraits of relatives who served during the conflict, while the *Flame of Memory* from the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier has already arrived in the region to mark the occasion.

Over 200 athletes gathered in Nizhny Tagil and Kachkanar for Victory Day-themed sambo tournaments. These competitions, alongside other events, form part of the national Sport of Russia state program, which promotes physical activity and patriotic values.

At School No. 21 in Kamensk-Uralsky, 50 teams from the Southern Administrative District are taking part in *Zarnitsa 2.0*, a military-patriotic game. Participants face challenges in drill training, Kalashnikov rifle assembly, magazine loading, and air rifle marksmanship. The event also includes a quiz on Russian statehood and military history. The same school is hosting the Sverdlovsk Oblast Championship in phygital sports, featuring a 'duathlon–martial arts' discipline. Meanwhile, the Palace of Sambo in Verkhnyaya Pyshma has become the venue for the regional Youth Martial Arts Games. Over 2,000 young athletes are competing across 14 different disciplines, showcasing their skills in a variety of combat sports. These events bring together sports and remembrance, ensuring that the legacy of the Great Patriotic War remains alive through physical and competitive activities.

The celebrations in Sverdlovsk Oblast combine athletic competition with historical reflection. Thousands of participants, from young martial artists to hockey players, are taking part in events designed to honour the past. The initiatives also support broader state goals of fostering fitness, discipline, and national pride.
