Steelers draft Drew Allar as McCarthy's first QB pick in 2026

The Pittsburgh Steelers have drafted Penn State quarterback Drew Allar in the third round of the 2026 NFL Draft. Selected with the 76th overall pick, Allar becomes the youngest signal-caller on the roster and the only one personally chosen by new head coach Mike McCarthy. His arrival adds depth to a quarterback room that already includes Will Howard and Mason Rudolph. Allar stood out during the Steelers’ rookie camp as the only quarterback among 40 participants. His early performance gave the team a first look at a potential future beyond Aaron Rodgers, whose return remains uncertain. The Steelers have placed an unrestricted free agent tender on Rodgers, but the veteran has yet to make a final decision about his playing future.

McCarthy, known for developing quarterbacks, previously mentored Rodgers during their time together with the Green Bay Packers. Under Rodgers’ leadership last season, Pittsburgh ended its long NFC West title drought but fell short in the Wild Card round. General manager Omar Khan has maintained open and positive discussions with Rodgers about his role moving forward. With Allar now in the mix, the Steelers’ quarterback group takes shape. He joins Howard and Rudolph, both of whom bring experience but were not hand-picked by the new coaching staff. McCarthy’s decision to draft Allar signals a possible long-term plan, regardless of Rodgers’ choice.

The Steelers now have four quarterbacks under contract, though Rodgers’ status remains unresolved. Allar’s selection and early camp showing suggest the team is preparing for multiple scenarios. His development under McCarthy could shape Pittsburgh’s offence for years to come.
