Severe thunderstorms strike Komi Republic with high winds and heavy rain

Strong thunderstorms are set to hit parts of the Komi Republic, with warnings issued for several southern districts. Residents in Ust-Vymsky, Kortkerossky, Ust-Kulomsky, Sysolsky, Priluzsky, and Koygorodsky, as well as the Syktyvkar area, should prepare for severe weather conditions. Authorities have urged people to take precautions as gusty winds and heavy rain move in. The storm will bring localised winds from the southwest and west, reaching speeds of 6 to 11 metres per second. Squalls may peak at 15 to 18 m/s, increasing the risk of falling branches, unstable structures, and power disruptions. Residents are advised to secure loose objects and stay alert for possible outages.

Outside, people should avoid large solitary trees, power lines, and antennas, as well as billboards and buildings with weak roofs. Parents have been asked to explain safety measures to children, ensuring they understand the risks of playing outdoors during the storm. Travel plans should be reconsidered, with officials recommending against hiking, forest trips, or visits to lakes and rivers. Large public events and unnecessary journeys are also discouraged.

Drivers must take extra care on the roads, keeping a safe distance from other vehicles and sticking to speed limits. Parking near trees or billboards should be avoided, as strong winds could cause them to collapse. If an emergency arises, the unified emergency number 112 can be dialled from any phone. The storm is expected to disrupt daily routines, with power cuts and structural damage possible. Residents should limit time outdoors, secure their property, and follow official guidance until conditions improve. Emergency services remain on standby for any urgent situations that may arise.
