GenHEART: Australia's bold 10-year plan to tackle childhood obesity and heart disease

Australia’s top child health researchers have launched GenHEART, a ten-year project to combat the nation’s obesity crisis. The initiative will focus on improving heart health, diet, exercise, and sleep in primary school-aged children. With cardiometabolic diseases now affecting one in fifteen Australians, the programme aims to cut costs and reduce long-term health risks. GenHEART will begin in 2027 with four large-scale clinical trials. Each trial will address a different aspect of cardiometabolic risk: sleep (GenSLEEP), weight (GenWEIGHT), blood pressure (GenPRESSURE), and physical activity (GenMOVE). Researchers believe early intervention during primary school years is crucial, as unhealthy habits like poor sleep, inactivity, and weight gain often develop then.

The project will use data from Generation Australia, a platform combining two major studies: Generation Victoria and ORIGINS. This vast dataset will help track long-term health trends and test new prevention strategies. Beyond children, the programme will also involve parents, families, and local health services to create broader community impact. Cardiometabolic diseases currently cost Australia over $23 billion annually in healthcare expenses. By bringing together experts from multiple fields, GenHEART hopes to shift the trajectory of children’s health. The initiative marks a new approach in public health, blending large-scale data, advanced research, and real-world interventions.

GenHEART’s four trials will target key risk factors in childhood to prevent long-term disease. The project’s success could ease the financial burden on Australia’s healthcare system while improving well-being for families. Researchers plan to share findings widely to inform future policies and public health strategies.
