Severe Ice Storm and Valentine's Day Celebrations from February 16-25
Monday: Amateur Talent Show at the Nursing Home
Children entertained the residents with a brief talent show on Monday. For a glimpse of their performances, you can watch the YouTube video.
Tuesday: Winter Weather Conditions
Residents woke up to just under an inch of snow on Tuesday. Despite indications from weather apps suggesting 4.1 inches fell, no additional snow accumulated throughout the day, and it had melted by evening. Several northern towns experienced more substantial snowfall, but our area remained unaffected. A shared dinner of Chicago-style deep-dish pizza marked our study of Illinois.
Wednesday: Ice Storm Captivates
Wednesday morning saw a picturesque winter wonderland, covered in ice. The peaceful scenic beauty of the iced woods captivated everyone throughout the morning before it started melting. Concerns were raised for the young trees and bushes, but no significant damage was reported. The neighboring town, however, faced destruction worse than Hurricane Helene, with numerous uprooted trees and prolonged power outages. Fortunately, our area escaped such calamities.
Friday: Valentine's Day Delights
Kaitlyn and Tilly prepared heart-shaped blueberry pancakes, while Andy served scrambled eggs with peppers and sausage for a delightful Valentine lunch. In the afternoon, the family worked together after sorting and counting 320 packets of seeds sent by a fan. The kids eagerly looked forward to starting a garden once the cold weather eased. The girls cleaned the porch and coop, while the children and I gathered and transferred fallen sticks to the woods.
The sky was stunning as dinnertime approached, with Andy preparing homemade tomato soup. A offering of popcorn was served with dinner for Indiana. Post-dinner, the family watched a special Valentine's episode of "Sweet Home Sextuplets." It served as their only well-known Valentine's Day movie. The evening concluded with Kaitlyn making traditional buckeyes for Ohio. After the children were put to bed, the adults savored some Hershey chocolates, marking their annual tradition.
The environmental science class discussions on Wednesday focused on the impact of climate-change on weather patterns, looking at the recent ice storm as a case study. In the coming days, students will be conducting experiments to better understand the science behind the transformation of normal weather conditions into extreme events.
As the weekend approaches, the residents are keeping a close eye on the weather forecast, hoping for mild temperatures in preparation for the upcoming science fair presentations on Sunday, which will focus on innovative ways to conserve the environment and mitigate climate-change.
