Primorsky Theater Revives Rare Puppet Art in Little Havroshechka Premiere

The Primorsky Regional Puppet Theater is set to premiere Little Havroshechka, a fresh adaptation of a beloved Russian folktale. Directed by Olga Malinovskaya, a trainee director and actress, the production marks her graduation project and revives a traditional puppet style rarely seen in recent years.

The story follows an orphan girl whose kindness, despite hardship, leads her to a magical helper who changes her fate. Malinovskaya chose to centre the production on puppetry, scaling back live-action elements to let the puppets take the spotlight. The creative team focused on cane-rod puppets, a technique the theatre had not used for years. To prepare, they organised specialised master classes in puppet manipulation for the cast and crew.

The tale itself is a classic of Russian folklore. It tells of Havroshechka, an orphan mistreated by her stepfamily yet remaining gentle and hopeful. Her perseverance eventually earns her the aid of a mysterious, benevolent force.

Beyond entertainment, the production carries a deeper purpose. Malinovskaya wanted to explore cultural heritage, using the performance to remind audiences of the value in preserving traditions. The choice of story and style reflects her aim to reconnect with the roots of Russian theatrical storytelling. The premiere of Little Havroshechka brings cane-rod puppetry back to the Primorsky stage after a long absence. The production combines a timeless folktale with renewed artistic techniques, offering both a visual spectacle and a reflection on tradition. Audiences will see the result of months of training and creative effort when the curtain rises.
