Valais Canton Faces Potential Flooding After Glacier Collapse

In the aftermath of a glacier collapse in the Swiss canton of Valais, several villages are at risk of flooding due to the swelling River Lonza. According to Christian Studer, an official from the Canton of Valais' Natural Hazards Office, the lake formed behind the fallen ice and rock masses is anticipated to overflow during the early morning hours of Friday.

As a precaution, 16 people were evacuated from Wiler and Kippel, and two from Blatten, as reported by the civil protection service. In Blatten itself, homes that initially avoided damage from the glacier collapse are now under threat from the rising waters of the Lonza.

On Wednesday, a significant portion of the Birch glacier in the canton of Valais collapsed, releasing an estimated three million cubic meters of ice and rock into the valley and onto the houses in Blatten, which had previously been evacuated. Unfortunately, a 64-year-old man remains missing, according to authorities.

The debris deposit created by the glacier collapse is unstable, complicating any attempts at intervention due to the risk of debris flow within the mass. The Swiss Army has set up a base camp, preparing to deploy clearing equipment and pumps to protect the riverbed.

The formation of a local state of emergency has been announced, with downstream municipalities, including those in the Rhône valley, readying for potential evacuations. Authorities remain vigilant as the situation may persist for several weeks.

As the water level rises at a rate of approximately 80 cm per hour, the focus is on maintaining a stable channel for the River Lonza to flow through the debris. The authorities are also concerned about the potential formation of additional water pockets within the debris. Continuous monitoring is crucial to prevent any sudden changes that could lead to devastating flooding.
