Nizhny Novgorod's tram network gears up for major expansion and upgrades

EcoProjects LLC is planning to expand tram services in Nizhny Novgorod. The company aims to improve transport links by extending routes and upgrading infrastructure. Two new extensions are currently under consideration. The first proposed route would reach Novinki, but the area’s dense buildings and tangled utility lines make progress difficult. The second extension targets Sormovo’s 7th Microdistrict, a large residential zone in need of better transport connections.

Work on rebuilding key tram tracks is almost finished. Next year, the depot and traction substations will undergo major renovations. At the same time, modernised trams will replace older models, boosting capacity and reliability.

Trams already provide a fast, high-capacity alternative to cars in busy districts. By avoiding traffic jams, they help reduce congestion in parts of the city. The upgrades will bring newer trams, smoother tracks, and better depot facilities. If approved, the extensions to Novinki and Sormovo’s 7th Microdistrict would further improve public transport access. The changes are set to roll out from next year onwards.
