Miami's East Flagler Street reopens after years of disruptive construction delays

Downtown Miami’s East Flagler Street has finally emerged from years of construction. The £30 million makeover, approved over five years ago, faced repeated delays before completion. Now, businesses and residents are welcoming the return of foot traffic to the revitalised area. The newly finished sections of East Flagler Street now boast curbless blocks and wide sidewalks. These changes create extra space for outdoor dining and pedestrian movement. The transformation follows a long period of disruption, with some intersections, like the one near Sneak Peek Luxury, staying closed until February.

To bring life back to the area, the Flagler District Business Improvement District (BID) launched ‘Weekend on Flagler’ in February. The events, held every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evening, feature live music, comedy, and fashion shows. Their goal is to shift perceptions away from the street’s old reputation as a construction zone.

Local business owners have already noticed a difference. Rocio Cano, a master barber at Bespoke BarberPub, reports more walk-in clients on weekends. Meanwhile, Terrell Fritz, executive director of the Flagler BID, expressed satisfaction at seeing both residents and visitors returning. The BID has secured funding to keep the weekend entertainment running through Memorial Day. The weekend events aim to highlight the street’s fresh look and support businesses hit by years of construction. With improved infrastructure and regular entertainment, the area is now positioned to regain its status as a bustling downtown destination. The effort reflects a coordinated push to restore activity and attract customers back to East Flagler Street.
