Free motorcycle safety course aims to cut rising rider fatalities

Decades of experience won't stop Alan Humes from refining his skills. With 6,000+ rider deaths in 2024, this free class couldn't come at a better time.

Free motorcycle safety course aims to cut rising rider fatalities

A free motorcycle safety course is taking place this weekend in Arapahoe County, led by the local sheriff’s department. Alan Humes, a rider with nearly four decades of experience, is among the attendees. He believes such training is useful for motorcyclists at any skill level. The two-day class is open to employees of Arapahoe County, the City of Centennial, or the Towns of Bennett and Deer Trail, along with their immediate family. Deputy Dennis Dempsey, a member of the sheriff’s motorcycle unit, is running the sessions. Participants will learn advanced techniques to improve safety on public roads.

Humes, who has ridden motorcycles for around 40 years, sees great value in the course. He even stated he would pay for it if it weren’t free. The sheriff’s department plans to hold another session on June 13 and 14. This initiative comes as motorcycle fatalities remain high. In 2024, over 6,000 riders died in crashes across the U.S., one of the worst figures since 1975.

The free class aims to reduce accidents by teaching better riding skills. Another session is scheduled for mid-June, giving more riders the chance to attend. Organisers hope the training will help lower the number of serious incidents on the road.
