Maharashtra rolls out digital ferry tickets to beat monsoon queues

The Maharashtra government has launched a digital ticketing system for passenger ferry services in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The new platform aims to cut long queues at ferry points while making ticket purchases more transparent and convenient for commuters. Transport Minister Nitesh Rane instructed officials to fast-track the online ticketing platform ahead of the monsoon season. The first phase will cover the Versova-Madh route, which handles around 22,000 daily transactions. Authorities plan to expand the system to other key corridors, including Gateway of India, Belapur, Elephanta, and DCD Terminal.

The government wants at least 50 per cent of all ticket sales to move online within three months. Commuters will soon have options like monthly, quarterly, and annual digital passes. QR-code entry, smart gates, handheld ticketing devices, and multi-modal payment methods will also be introduced.

Beyond improving commuter experience, the state is exploring commercial revenue by offering advertising and branding opportunities on the digital platform. The push comes as part of broader efforts to upgrade water transport infrastructure before the rains set in. The digital shift is expected to streamline ferry operations and reduce physical ticketing delays. With new payment methods and automated gates, the system will also support faster boarding. Officials will monitor the initial rollout before expanding to other high-traffic routes.
