Maharashtra bans forced sales of non-subsidised products with fertilisers

The Maharashtra government has banned the forced sale of non-subsidised products alongside subsidised fertilisers. The decision comes after repeated complaints from farmers about unfair business practices in the fertiliser trade. Officials have ordered immediate enforcement of the new rule across the state. Farmers had raised concerns over manufacturers and suppliers ‘tagging’ or ‘linking’ extra non-subsidised items to subsidised fertilisers. This practice made it difficult for them to buy only what they needed at fair prices. The Union Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers had already declared such tactics illegal and unfair.

The Agriculture Commissionerate in Pune has now been instructed to enforce the ban without delay. Companies and dealers selling subsidised chemical fertilisers can no longer pressure farmers into purchasing additional products. Authorities have warned that strict legal action will follow any violations. The state government emphasised that farmers must have easy access to subsidised fertilisers. It also made clear that exploitation through forced sales would not be tolerated under any circumstances.

The ban aims to stop unfair sales practices in the fertiliser market. Farmers in Maharashtra can now buy subsidised fertilisers without being forced to purchase extra, non-subsidised items. Violators will face legal consequences under the new enforcement measures.
