Koepka storms ahead with 8-under 63 at CJ Cup Byron Nelson opener
Brooks Koepka took an early lead at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson on Thursday with an 8-under 63. His strong finish at the revamped TPC Craig Ranch put him one shot ahead of the field. Meanwhile, world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler sits three strokes back after the first round. Koepka last competed at TPC Craig Ranch in 2021 before joining LIV Golf. This time, he made a quick impact with four birdies in five holes on the back nine. His standout moment came at the par-5 12th, where he carded an eagle to reach 4 under through five holes.
Si Woo Kim, ranked 24th in the world, matched Koepka’s pace early on. He recorded four birdies on the front nine and another four on the back, finishing tied for second place alongside four other players. Scheffler, the defending champion, started steadily at 2 under. A late push saw him pick up birdies on three of his final five holes. However, his opening round left him trailing Koepka by three shots, ending any chance of a wire-to-wire victory at his hometown event. The tournament, now linked with the CJ Cup since 2024, continues with Koepka leading and Scheffler looking to close the gap.
Koepka’s 63 gives him a narrow advantage after the first round. Scheffler remains in contention but must improve to overtake the leader. The competition now shifts to Friday, where the field will aim to challenge Koepka’s early dominance.
