Kiki Rice makes history as Toronto Tempo's first-ever WNBA draft pick
The Toronto Tempo made history by selecting UCLA star Kiki Rice as their first-ever draft pick at No. 6. The expansion team’s choice came after a standout college season where Rice led her team to their first NCAA national title. Known for her defensive skills and aggressive drives, she quickly became a key player for the Tempo. Rice entered the WNBA draft as a top prospect, thanks to her strong senior year at UCLA. She averaged 14.9 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 4.3 assists per game, earning Big Ten tournament MVP honours. Her leadership helped UCLA secure their first national championship, solidifying her reputation as a clutch performer.
The Tempo wasted no time in selecting her as their inaugural college pick. Since joining, Rice has adapted well to a back-up point guard role, averaging 7.7 points and 1.3 assists in around 20 minutes per game. Her first test came against her former UCLA teammates, Lauren Betts and Angela Dugalic, when Toronto faced the Washington Mystics. In a recent match against the Los Angeles Sparks, Rice contributed 11 points and two assists in 21 minutes, despite the team’s loss.
Rice’s transition from college star to professional back-up has been smooth so far. Her scoring and playmaking have already made an impact for the Tempo. As the season progresses, her role in the team’s development will likely grow.
