Kazakhstan strengthens Caspian Sea emergency response as water levels decline

Kazakhstan is boosting its emergency response and environmental safety measures in the Caspian Sea as water levels continue to drop. A high-level inspection recently took place to assess the readiness of naval assets and maritime infrastructure in the region.

The visit included reviews of specialised vessels and equipment designed for oil spill response and rescue missions. Emergency Situations Minister Chingis Arinov led the inspection at the North Caspian Environmental Response Base. He examined the fleet’s preparedness and the condition of key infrastructure supporting emergency operations in Kazakhstan’s sector of the Caspian Sea.

Accompanying him were Atyrau Region Deputy Akim Kairat Nurtayev and NCOC Deputy Managing Director Zhandos Orazaliyev. Their focus was on ensuring the operational capability of vessels and equipment for rapid oil spill containment and search-and-rescue tasks.

The inspection also highlighted ongoing improvements to the Primorsky Canal. Since March, large-scale dredging, widening, and rehabilitation work have been carried out to restore its functionality. These upgrades allow specialised vessels to operate more effectively—without relying on state budget funding.

Officials emphasised that the canal’s restoration plays a crucial role in maintaining stable maritime infrastructure. It also strengthens environmental and industrial safety across the Caspian region.

Kazakhstan previously established JSC Teniz Zhasagy to oversee offshore emergency response operations. The company’s responsibilities include oil spill containment and coordinating search-and-rescue missions in the area. The recent inspection underscores Kazakhstan’s commitment to enhancing maritime safety in the Caspian Sea. Upgraded infrastructure and specialised response capabilities aim to address challenges posed by falling water levels. These measures are expected to improve emergency preparedness and environmental protection in the region.
