Hatchbacks still rule India's used car market—but SUVs are closing in fast
Hatchbacks continue to dominate India’s used car market, holding over half of all sales. Seven of the top 10 models are hatchbacks, with the Maruti Swift leading at 4.93 percent. Yet SUVs are gaining ground fast, climbing from 15 percent of the market in 2023 to 32 percent in 2025.
The Maruti Swift remains the most popular used car in India, reflecting the enduring appeal of practical, affordable hatchbacks. These vehicles are favoured for their reliability, low running costs, and ease of use in crowded cities. Overall, hatchbacks still make up 52 percent of the used car market, while sedans account for 16 percent.
Only one SUV, the Hyundai Creta, has broken into the top 10, holding a 2.05 percent share. Its strong safety ratings, feature-rich design, and brand reputation also place it among the most sought-after premium used cars. This dual presence makes the Creta a rare model that bridges both high-volume sales and aspirational value. The shift toward SUVs is accelerating, but supply remains limited. Many buyers want lightly-used, recent-model SUVs, yet the resale cycle for these vehicles is still catching up. Industry observers expect SUVs to claim more spots in the top 10 as newer models enter the second-hand market in greater numbers.
Hatchbacks still form the core of India’s used car market, but SUV demand is rising steadily. With SUVs now accounting for nearly a third of sales, their influence is set to grow further. The balance between affordability and aspiration will likely shape future trends in the coming years.
