Guardians trade for Gold Glove catcher Patrick Bailey to bolster defence
The Cleveland Guardians have acquired catcher Patrick Bailey from the San Francisco Giants. The move aims to boost the team’s defence and add depth behind the plate. Bailey, a two-time Gold Glove winner, brings strong defensive skills to the Guardians’ roster.
The trade involved the Guardians sending the No. 29 draft pick and pitcher Matt Wilkinson to the Giants. In return, San Francisco received $3.27 million in slot value as part of the deal.
Bailey has built a reputation for his defensive play, recording plus-20 and plus-19 marks in defensive runs saved over the past two seasons. However, his offensive numbers have struggled this year, with a batting line of .146/.213/.183, including just one home run and five RBIs across 30 games. Over his career, he holds a .224 batting average, a .282 on-base percentage, and a .329 slugging percentage. The Guardians have been sharing catching duties between Bo Naylor and Austin Hedges. With Bailey now in the mix, the team hopes he will strengthen their defence while also providing more offensive support. Cleveland is currently hosting the Minnesota Twins for two more games before travelling to face the Los Angeles Angels on Monday.
Bailey’s arrival gives the Guardians a proven defensive catcher with room to improve at the plate. The team will look to integrate him quickly as they continue their season. The Giants, meanwhile, gain draft capital and financial flexibility from the trade.
