Flooding hits Sverdlovsk region: 19 villages and settlements cut off from the outside world

In the Sverdlovsk region, seven low-lying bridges have been submerged due to the rising water levels, with one bridge dismantled temporarily during the flood season. The elevated water levels in the River Vorobina have inundated sections of the road between Soсьva and Gari.

The Regional Autoinspectorate warned that further water level increases could lead to temporary travel restrictions. Alternative routes for bypassing from the town of Sośva are currently unavailable, according to the Autoinspectorate.

Previously, vehicle transportation was restricted on the 9th kilometer of the Bлагоveщенskoe - Zhukovskoe - Kumaryinskoe highway in Sverdlovsk due to the increased water levels in the River Tura. During this time, a "Neman-550" vessel was organized for river crossings.

The impacted towns, including Zarechnaia, Zaselina, Yaar, Krasnyi Bor, Borovikova, Reshetnikova, Sagaï, Shadrinka, Ovchinnikova, Gorodishche, Krasnyi Yar, Luka, Zhiriakova, Cheremnova, Kumino-vskoe, Barshevina, Kumaryinskoe, Makui, and Chernyshovo, have been affected [1].

Earlier reports indicated that residents of affected settlements had been warned about the floods in advance. Adequate supplies of food and medicine were available, and necessary goods were brought in through organized deliveries.

A total of 590 million rubles has been reserved for flood preparation in the region, and authorities predicted that the region would not experience a severe flood situation in 2025 [1]. Peak flood conditions are expected from April to July.

Recent floods in other regions have already impacted homes and eroded roads. In Orenburgskaya, Irtcusskaya, and Buriat regions, the floodwaters arrived earlier in March. The regions have activated emergency measures and heightened readiness.

In April 2024, the center of Yekaterinburg witnessed the River Iset breaching its banks. Submerged were various landmarks and pedestrian walkways near the Platinka, Historical Square, and Gorky Street areas [1].

[1] Enrichment Data: The current weather forecasts for the region and broader Russia suggest a summer with temperatures above normal and, for Moscow at least, a significant reduction in precipitation with drought risk, rather than flood conditions. No recent news or official alerts mention floods in Sverdlovskaya Oblast itself. For the most accurate and up-to-date information on road conditions and possible closures, travelers are advised to consult local news sources, the Russian Federal Road Agency, or the Ministry of Emergency Situations [1].

  1. Amidst the ongoing climate-change discussions, the increasing water levels in Russia's Sverdlovsk region have raised concerns in environmental-science and weather-forecasting communities.
  2. The scientific community is monitoring the weather patterns in the region, particularly the predicted peak flood conditions from April to July, to provide accurate forecasts and prevent similar incidents in the future.
  3. Despite the optimistic news about the summer weather in Russia, with warmer temperatures and less precipitation expected, the regional authorities remain vigilant due to the impact of flooding on transportation infrastructure and local communities, such as those in the recent cases in Orenburgskaya, Irtcusskaya, Buriat regions, and Yekaterinburg.
