Environmental expert explains the nature of the dust storm in Omsk region

Article:

In Omsk, Russia on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, the storm was more than just powerful, it was filthy. Cars, clothes, buildings, and the locals themselves were covered in a layer of grime.

Member of the Omsk Regional Public Council, professor, and academician of the International Academy of Sciences for Ecology and Safety of Life Activities Anatoliy Solovyev, at the request of "SuperOmsk," explained the origin of this dirt.

"In essence, the wind was widespread in many regions of Russia, a common atmospheric event. But it's inappropriate to say that the dust came from the territory of Kazakhstan. This is a general, as they say, dust storm that covers not only the territory of Omsk region and Kazakhstan, but was not limited to our region. I believe that the dust and grime, about which there's talk, originated from these same cities. You noticed stains on your clothes yesterday, didn't you? It's not just regular dust that's been swept away. In Omsk, the wind picked up street dirt left over from winter, as it's impossible to clear it up in just a few days, even with regular weekend clean-ups, not to mention particles of soot, waste from gold mines, and industrial zones. This is the result of living in a megapolis. Remember, Dostoevsky wrote about Omsk, "Dusty and dirty town." The steppe and forests in Omsk region are mainly only in the north. Roughly speaking, yesterday's wind revealed which cities in Russia have a lot of dust, which have less", explained "SuperOmsk" the ecologist.

We'll remind you, the Omsk residents were indeed complaining about soiled clothes, cars, windows, and door sills in their homes. The storm added to the chaos in a different way: it knocked over trees, tore off roofs, flooded some homes, and several people even died, about which "SuperOmsk" has already reported.
