Heavy Winter Storm Brings Feared Travel Chaos to Bremen
Bremen paralyzed as winter storm buries roads and halts transit
The sudden winter onslaught has plunged Bremen into the anticipated transportation gridlock: bus services were completely suspended, several tram lines ground to a halt, and snowplow crews struggled to keep up with the relentless snowfall.
Employees from the city's transit authority had to shovel tracks by hand to clear them. Even access roads to the critical freight hub were buried under deep snow, leaving trucks—and in some cases, passenger cars—stranded. Wheels spun helplessly, vehicles had to be pushed free, and pedestrians trudged through snowdrifts or skidded across icy paths. But the ordeal is nearly over: while the snow will linger into the start of the week, temperatures are set to climb, with highs reaching around nine degrees Celsius by the weekend.
