City Council in Oldenburg Demands Detailed Data - Demanding Transparency: Oldenburg City Council Pursues Comprehensive Disclosure on Toxic Waste

City Council Demands Thorough Investigation into Environmental Concerns at Oldenburg Airbase

The Oldenburg city council has called for a comprehensive investigation into potential environmental hazards in the former airbase area. The council's move comes amid allegations of illegal waste disposal and corruption suspicions, which, if confirmed, could lead to the termination of contracts involving the implicated companies. Councilman Christoph Baak of the CDU party criticized Mayor Jürgen Krogmann (SPD) for inadequate crisis communication, stating that residents' concerns had not been taken seriously.

The city's plans for the airbase involve constructing a new residential area. The local prosecutor's office is currently investigating three individuals in connection with the renovation of the former military area. The suspects are believed to be responsible for illegally burying special waste, including asbestos and carcinogenic substances, within the former shooting range area.

Initial reports, commissioned by the Oldenburg prosecutor's office, show that toxic substances in soil samples, extending up to a depth of 3.90 meters, exceed acceptable limit values. However, a separate groundwater analysis commissioned by the City of Oldenburg concluded that there was no danger to human health or the environment. Mayor Krogmann maintains faith in the administration, emphasizing the need to examine the prosecutor's office report first.

A separate corruption investigation, led by the prosecutor's office in Osnabrück, is underway, looking into alleged environmental offenses. Among the accused is a former municipal employee.
