Dananeer Mobeen's Devdas critique backfires after her own film flops

Pakistani actress Dananeer Mobeen recently sparked a heated online debate after calling the 2002 Bollywood film Devdas 'overrated'. The criticism drew swift backlash from netizens, with many pointing out her past admiration for the movie. The controversy comes just weeks after her own film, Mera Lyari, struggled at the box office. Devdas, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, remains one of Indian cinema’s most celebrated films. Adapted from Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s 1917 novel, it is known for its lavish sets, intricate costumes, and emotional depth. The film’s soundtrack and visual spectacle have earned it a lasting reputation as a classic.

Dananeer Mobeen’s remarks about *Devdas* triggered a wave of criticism on social media. Many users highlighted the irony, as she had previously dressed as a character from the film. The backlash intensified when comparisons were drawn to her own acting career. *Mera Lyari*, in which Mobeen starred, was released in Pakistani cinemas on May 8, 2023. Reports suggest the film sold only 22 tickets, leading to its declaration as a commercial flop.

The online dispute over Devdas has put Dananeer Mobeen’s comments under scrutiny. While the 2002 film continues to be praised for its artistic achievements, her criticism has reignited discussions about its legacy. Meanwhile, her recent film’s poor performance adds another layer to the ongoing conversation.
